Worms on my lappy - Day 16

This news is a slap on the face of Microsoft, who tried offering $250 million for a tip off on the creators of Conficker worm. Not only that the creators have managed to remain anonymous, they have now up their ante against security vendors who are working to stop the worm spread.

The latest version of Conficker worm, named Conficker.C, shuts down security services, blocks computers from connecting to security Web sites, and downloads a Trojan. It also is programmed to begin connecting to 50,000 different domains on April 1 to receive updated copies or other malware, as opposed to connecting to 250 domains a day as previous versions are doing. Now, stop thinking if this is an April fool prank.

Microsoft, Symantec, F-Secure and other security vendors including a host of domain registration providers, have been working to thwart the efforts of the deadly Downadup worm creators by pre-registering and locking up the domain names being used by the worm to distribute updates.

The second version of Conficker worm, also known as Kido or Downadup was detected last month and it added the ability to spread through network shares and via removable storage devices, like USB drives, through the AutoRun function in Windows.
