25 Reasons to Convert to Linux

1. You’re not competing with off-the-shelf Windows. You’re competing with bundled and pirated Windows, both of which seem free.

2. This is a good reason for programmers to switch, but it’s almost entirely irrelevant to everyone else.

3. I’m skeptical (to say the least) about how good community support really is. Newbie-friendly forums are too often staffed by newbies; I cringe when I visit Ubuntu’s forums. The more-technical forums tend to be more interested in more-technical problems. <distroplug>One exception seems to be Arch’s forums, which has a newbie section with a shocking patience for constantly answering the same questions. Shame the distro itself isn’t quite as friendly.</distroplug>

5. Minor obsolescence, on the other hand… It sucks to get a closed-source program that expects a different library version. And then there’s the code breakage that comes with major GCC updates.
