Basic PC-Builder Glossary

ATX, MicroATX: These are the two most common “form factors” (or standard sizes) of PC motherboard. ATX boards are, predictably, larger, measuring 9.6×12 inches versus MicroATX’s 9.6×9.6 inches. Your PC case must support the form factor of the motherboard for the board to fit inside properly.

Backplane: In a consumer PC, the rear area of the case through which the brackets and ports of PCI or PCI Express expansion cards are visible. The cards screw down or otherwise attach onto the backplane for stability
